GAME RECAP

Partick Thistle vs. Greenock Morton

Late Drama at Firhill as Jags Snatch a Point

Partick Thistle fought until the final whistle at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill, with a last-gasp Logan Chalmers goal securing a dramatic 2-2 draw against Greenock Morton in the William Hill Championship.

The game started at a blistering pace, with both sides creating early chances. Thistle had an opportunity to take the lead from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, but Brian Graham saw his effort denied by Ryan Mullen. Just before the break, Morton capitalised on a free-kick opportunity, with Nathan Shaw firing past David Mitchell to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Thistle responded with intensity in the second half, and their pressure paid off in the 60th minute when Dan O’Reilly volleyed home an equaliser from a corner. However, Morton quickly regained the lead nine minutes later as Filip Stuparevic bundled the ball over the line.

With time running out, the Jags kept pushing forward, and in stoppage time, substitute Terry Ablade’s pace opened up the Morton defence, allowing Chalmers to tap in at the back post, to secure a hard-earned point.

The Jags now turn their attention to the next fixture at Falkirk as they look to build on this battling performance.

The Championship Race

The William Hill Championship table is beginning to take shape as we approach the latter stages of the season. With crucial points at stake, teams are battling for promotion, playoff spots, and survival. Here's how the standings look after Match day 23:

Match Recaps

Saturday, February 1st

Partick Thistle 2–2 Greenock Morton (FT)
A stoppage-time equaliser from Logan Chalmers rescued a point for the Jags at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill. After a first-half setback from Nathan Shaw’s free-kick, Dan O’Reilly’s volley pulled Thistle level early in the second half. Morton quickly regained the lead, but Thistle kept fighting and were rewarded at the death when Chalmers tapped home from a Terry Ablade assist.

Dunfermline Athletic 3–1 Raith Rovers (FT)
Christopher Kane’s second-half hat-trick—including two penalties—propelled Dunfermline to victory after Raith initially led through Dylan Easton’s first-half spot-kick.

Airdrieonians 2–1 Queen's Park (FT)
Ben Wilson’s double, including a late penalty, secured a crucial win for Airdrie. Queen’s Park had leveled through Joshua Scott, but Wilson’s clinical finishes from 12 yards ensured the Diamonds took all three points.

Hamilton Academical 0–2 Ayr United (FT)
Ayr struck late, with Mark McKenzie and George Stanger finding the net in the final ten minutes to take all three points. Hamilton will be looking to fare better this weekend in The Scottish Cup.

Friday, January 31st

Falkirk 1–2 Livingston (FT)
Livingston edged Falkirk in a tight contest, with Reece McAlear’s first half injury-time strike proving the difference. Falkirk had drawn level through Brad Spencer’s penalty but couldn’t hold on as Livi grabbed a crucial away win.

Championship Analysis

Falkirk have been dislodged from top spot with Ayr United now at the summit. The Bairns will view the game with Thistle as a chance to get back in charge.

Partick Thistle stay in fourth, now seven points ahead of Queen’s Park as they continue their push to overtake the sides above them.

The relegation fight remains tight, with key battles ahead for the teams at the bottom.

With another dramatic match week in the books, all eyes turn to the only ‘Show in Town’ this weekend - Falkirk vs. Partick Thistle.

CLUB UPDATE

Transfers, Budget, and a New Sporting Director Role

The Partick Thistle board, led by Chairman Richard Beastall, has addressed recent concerns from supporters regarding the club’s transfer activity and squad decisions during the January window. Now that the window has closed, the club is providing insight into the factors behind these moves and outlining plans for the future.

Transfer Window Recap & Budget Adjustments

At the financial half-year mark in November, the club found itself running 4% over budget. With no additional revenue from cup competitions and rising costs—including unforeseen recruitment due to injuries and an upcoming increase in employer contributions.

Adjustments were necessary and the initial approach was to balance the budget by offloading players before reassessing squad needs. However, the situation changed unexpectedly when Heart of Midlothian and Hamilton Academical expressed late interest in two key players—Harry Milne and Scott Robinson. Both players were eager to pursue the offers, and indicated they wanted to move on

The club quickly moved to bring in reinforcements with Ethan Drysdale joining on loan from Hearts, while Hamilton’s captain, Scott Martin, was signed permanently. With these additions, the squad now consists of 20 senior players (including three loanees) and three apprentices, with further reinforcements under consideration—all within the club’s financial framework.

Introducing a Sporting Director

In a strategic move to strengthen football operations, Partick Thistle is creating a Sporting Director role. This position will oversee recruitment, transfers, and player development, ensuring a more structured and efficient approach to squad management.

The introduction of a dedicated Sporting Director will bring greater accountability, long-term planning, and financial oversight to the process. Recruitment for this role is set to begin shortly.

While the season has not unfolded as hoped, the club remains focused on its objectives. The board emphasises the importance of unity among players, staff, and supporters as Partick Thistle continues to push forward.

Iconic Strips of the Week

Iconic Strip of the Week: 1971 League Cup Final Strip

This week, we pay tribute to one of the most iconic kits in Partick Thistle history—the strip worn in the legendary 1971 League Cup Final.

The Kit: A bold red and yellow design that became a symbol of triumph.

The Moment: On October 23, 1971, Partick Thistle stunned Scottish football with a 4-1 victory over Celtic at Hampden Park, securing the club’s first-ever League Cup title.

The Heroes: Goals from Alex Rae, Bobby Lawrie, Denis McQuade, and Jimmy Bone sealed a historic first-half performance that will never be forgotten.

This kit stands as a reminder of one of the greatest underdog stories in Scottish football—a moment etched in Jags history and celebrated by generations of supporters.
