AYR UNITED

Partick Thistle vs. Ayr United

Ayr United - Firhill Awaits,

A massive Saturday afternoon clash is on the horizon as the Jags welcome Ayr United to the Wyre Stadium at Firhill for a crucial Scottish Championship encounter!

Mark Wilson said:

“It is terrific to be going into the game with Ayr United after a good win and performance at Queen's Park on Tuesday night. Ayr United will present a big challenge to us but we have good players as well, and we are at home, so we will look to take the game to them and win it.”

A Look Back at Some Memorable Home Victories Over Ayr United

A late Kyle Turner penalty secured all three points as Thistle edged out The Honest Men at The Wyre Stadium at Firhill. Missing Brian Graham through injury, the Jags battled hard, with Logan Chalmers and Aidan Fitzpatrick creating chances. Just as the match looked destined for a draw, Lee Ashcroft was pushed in the box, allowing Turner to step up and coolly slot home the winner from 12 yards.

A dominant home display put Thistle firmly in control of the tie. Jack McMillan’s near-post finish gave the Jags the lead before Brian Graham struck twice to cap off a commanding performance. Ayr, who were missing Dipo Akinyemi, who had been a threat all season, never breached the home defense, and Thistle took a three-goal advantage into the second leg.

A five-goal thriller saw Thistle claim a huge win over the visiting league leaders. Harry Milne cancelled out Dipo Akinyemi’s opener and Brian Graham found the net before Logan Chalmers levelled for Ayr. Stevie Lawless grabbed a late winner to send the home crowd wild, cutting Ayr’s lead at the top.

GAME RECAP

Queen’s Park vs. Partick Thistle

Jags Take Big Step Towards Play-Offs with Hampden Win

Partick Thistle took a massive step towards securing a play-off spot with a 2-0 victory over Queen’s Park at Hampden, extending their lead over the chasing pack to seven points.

The Jags got off to the perfect start, with Logan Chalmers opening the scoring inside four minutes. A slack pass from Queen’s Park goalkeeper Calum Ferrie was intercepted by Brian Graham, who quickly squared it to Chalmers. The winger wasted no time, launching a thunderous first-time volley over Ferrie and into the net from 15 yards.

Thistle continued to create chances, with Stuart Bannigan rattling the post from distance and Graham sending a flicked header just wide. At the other end, the home side had plenty of possession but rarely troubled Lewis Budinauckas in the Thistle goal, as the Jags defended resolutely.

Early in the second half, Chalmers thought he had his second of the night after latching onto a Graham pass and finishing neatly, but the offside flag denied him. The Jags kept pushing, dominating possession and testing Ferrie again through Dan O’Reilly and Kyle Turner.

With Queen’s Park struggling to find a way through, Thistle sealed the win deep into stoppage time. Chalmers broke forward on the right and unselfishly squared the ball for Alex Jakubiak, who calmly slotted home his first Jags goal since April 2022, sparking celebrations in the away end.

The win strengthens Thistle’s grip on fourth place, moving them seven points clear of Morton and Raith Rovers, both of whom have a game in hand.

Brian Graham said:

"We have worked hard on our style of play and was good to see that coming to life. The players are responding well to what we are asking them to do."

Match Recaps

Saturday, 8th March 2025

Falkirk 1–0 Dunfermline Athletic
A first-half strike from Brad Spencer was enough to see Falkirk past Dunfermline and extend their lead at the top to six points. Spencer slotted home after being teed up by Barney Stewart, and while Chris Kane thought he had equalised for the Pars, the goal was ruled out for handball. Falkirk nearly doubled their lead after the break, but Spencer’s effort curled just wide. Dunfermline remain second-bottom, still a point behind Hamilton in the battle for safety.

Greenock Morton 2–1 Ayr United
Greenock Morton stunned Ayr United with a second-half comeback at Cappielow, denting Ayr’s title push while keeping their own play-off hopes alive. Curtis Main put the visitors ahead early, but Cammy Blues levelled things up from close range after the break. Jordan Davies then struck a late winner from a corner before Dylan Corr saw red for a reckless challenge in the closing stages. Ayr now sit six points behind Falkirk, while Morton climbed above Raith Rovers.

Airdrieonians 2–1 Hamilton Academical
Airdrieonians secured bragging rights in the Lanarkshire derby with a dramatic late winner against Hamilton. After a tight first half, Adam Frizzell broke the deadlock in the 64th minute with a superb top-corner strike. Hamilton hit back through Sean McGinty’s header with seven minutes to play, but just two minutes later, Gavin Gallagher fired home from distance to seal the victory. The win keeps Airdrie’s survival hopes alive, now just seven points behind Dunfermline, while Hamilton remain third-bottom.

Kit of the Week - The 2023/24 Third Kit

Kit of the Week: The 2023/24 Third Kit

This week, we’re spotlighting a standout design from the 2023/24 season—the all-white third kit that made its debut in front of a sold-out away end against hearts Tynecastle Edinburgh.

A unique touch to this strip is the intricate map of Maryhill emblazoned across the front, with The Wyre Stadium at Firhill placed right at the heart of the design. Matchday staples from around Maryhill can also be identified throughout, reinforcing the club’s deep-rooted connection to the local community.

The goalkeeper version mirrors the same striking design, but in black, with both kits featuring matching shorts and socks to complete the look.

With its clean, modern aesthetic and historic nod to Maryhill, this strip quickly became a fan favourite, joining a long list of memorable Jags kits.
